    A Tale of Three Cities
An illustrated talk by John Bryan

In the days before mass communication, musicians and their patrons could only discover new musical styles by travelling, or by collecting music from the great European centres of musical production.

John Bryan, Professor of Music at the University of Huddersfield, highlights musical activities in 16th- and 17th-century Venice, Vienna and London and investigates how these cities acted as hubs, attracting musicians from foreign parts, cross-fertilising with native musical styles, and sending innovative musical ideas radiating out across the continent. This tale of musical life in three great renaissance and baroque cities will provide the context in which much of the music in the festival’s concert programmes was created.
