An engrossing documentary follows two women and two men, all from different ethnic backgrounds, as they enjoy their new freedom to sing by auditioning and competing in the popular American Idol- inspired TV show Afghan Star. Voting by SMS is an exercise in democracy but the women’s performances elicit death threats from conservative elements in society. An important exploration of modern culture in Afghanistan, the film received two awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival as well as a Prix Italia.
