BARGING IN! Handel’s Water Music

Handel’s Water Music suites, first performed in 1717 on a barge on the Thames to accompany King George I’s river party, comprise a varied assortment of elegantly boisterous dances and a grand overture, while their lavish orchestration likewise befits a Royal celebration.
No wonder ‘his Majesty liked [the music] so well, that he caus’d it to be plaid over three times in going and returning’.
