MUSICA INVICTISSIMA
HARMONIES FOR A HABSBURG DYNASTY

‘Invictissima’ (‘most unconquerable’) was a word often used to describe the might of the emperors, dukes and princes of Habsburg, but the Habsburgs also showed their power by employing many of the finest musicians from across Europe including Jacobus Vaet, Kapellmeister to Archduke Maximilian II of Austria, whose music demonstrates an adventurous mind and impressive versatility. This concert commemorates the 450th anniversary of Vaet’s death with motets and liturgical music for the Habsburg chapels, with a work based on Lutheran melodies by his pupil and friend, Jacobus Regnart.

“exquisitely controlled ... beautifully shaped...
the voices—silken and effortless—seem to be suspended in amber
” BBC Music Magazine
