Enrico Sagittario: Heinrich Schütz in Italy
Venice, 1611: the young German composer Schütz adopts an Italian version of his name to publish his first music, a collection of highly expressive settings of Italian madrigals setting star poets such as Guarini and Marino. These were the fruits of his studies with the leading Venetian of his day, the aging Giovanni Gabrieli. The connection between Schütz and Venice deepened when he returned in 1628, by which time Monteverdi was in charge of music at St Mark’s. This programme explores the Italian side of Schütz, putting music from his debut collection alongside the madrigals by Gabrieli and Monteverdi that inspired him, as well as toccatas for theorbo by Girolamo Kapsberger, an Italian composer with roots in Germany.
