Beethoven Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 4 in A Minor, Op. 23
Prokofiev Five Melodies for Violin and Piano, Op. 35
Grieg Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 3 in C minor, Op. 45

This recital of classic violin sonatas brings together two of the finest chamber musicians in the country. Described by legendary violinist Ida Haendel as “one of the most exceptionally gifted violinists I have ever encountered,” Martyn Jackson makes a welcome return to the core of the festival’s artists. Martyn is accompanied by worldrenowned pianist John Lenehan, praised by the New York Times for his “great flair and virtuosity” and the (London) Times wrote of his “masterly recital”. Both the Beethoven and Grieg sonatas are landmark compositions, Beethoven exploring the expressive potentialities and technical challenges of bringing the voices of the violin and piano into a unity that changed the idea of the violin sonata for ever. The Grieg sonata was the last chamber music he wrote. His horizons were epic and the Nordic landscape never far away. The Prokofiev pieces are beautifully crafted songs without words.

Following the recital there are masterclasses for local young musicians – do stay if you would like to listen
