Hummel    -  Fantasie in E Flat Op. 18
    Beethoven   -  Piano Sonata No.13 Op. 27. No. 1

Followed by piano masterclass to young musicians given by Andrew Brownell (free with recital ticket or £5 entry at the door, ends 3.15pm)

    Festival Artists: Andrew Brownell (piano)

Hummel was taught and housed by Mozart for two years free of charge and made his first concert appearance at the age of nine at one of Mozart's concerts. At about this time a young Beethoven arrived in Vienna and took lessons alongside Hummel. At the great man’s memorial service Hummel improvised on the piano. Schubert was so impressed that he dedicated his last three piano sonatas to him. Surrounded by genius composers Hummel has been overlooked although in his day he was much more prominent. Andrew Brownell won 1st Prize at the 2005 J.N. Hummel Competition in Bratislava, and was subsequently described as “one of the foremost Hummel interpreters of our time.”

Beethoven’s piano sonata No. 13, Op. 1 is less well known than the No 13, Op. 2, the so called ‘Moonlight’ sonata but is equally beautiful.
