“No holds were barred, hearts were on sleeves and techniques stretched to the limit. Electrifying.” York Chamber Music Festival’s internationally acclaimed artists return to thrill our growing following of music lovers with superb high class performances. As noted in their press reviews the chemistry between these London-based friends gives their concerts a freshness and vitality rarely found in chamber music groups.

The first half of this concert puts together late Haydn and early Beethoven quartets, written only a few years apart, both of which are ground-breaking; Haydn writing for an 800-seat public concert in London, buzzing with people, attentive and excited, very far removed from the refined Esterházy court! Beethoven, flexing his musical muscles with his six Opus 18 quartets and moving on from the legacy of Mozart and Haydn. In the second half we taste a flavour of Frank Bridge’s pre-World War One English pastoral innocence which we have been exploring in recent festivals. According to Schumann, “Mendelssohn is the Mozart of the 19th century”. Be that as it may what comes through in ‘child’ Mendelssohn’s quartet is the veneration he felt for the latequartets of Beethoven, with a strong overtone of unrequited infatuation with his 19 year-old neighbour!
