Mozart - Trio in E Flat Major for Piano, Viola and Clarinet K498, “Kegelstatt Trio”
Frank Bridge - Phantasy Piano Quartet in F sharp minor
Puccini - Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums), Elegy for String Quartet
Mozart - Clarinet Quintet in A Major, K. 581
Superstar of the clarinet, Emma Johnson joins the other Festival Artists to play two of Mozart’s ground-breaking pieces. Always full of fun it is said that Mozart wrote his clarinet trio while playing skittles (hence its nickname ‘skittle alley’)! This seems less than plausible for such a fully fashioned work, even for Mozart. He loved to play the viola so wrote himself a beautiful part in this joyous piece. Mozart’s quintet releases the expressive potential of the ‘new’ clarinet – one of his very greatest masterpieces.
Returning to our exploration of the pre-World War One music of Frank Bridge, his piano Quartet immerses us in a haunting mixture of French impressionism, English folk song and an atmosphere of wistful, pastoral innocence. Famous of course as composer of opera, Puccini wrote his Chrysanthemum quartet in response to the sudden death of his friend, Amadeo di Savoia, Duke of Aosta. The piece is named after the flower of mourning and heroism in Italian culture. It is suitably luscious and some of its themes were to reappear in his operas, notably Manon Lescaut.
