The arrival of the piano to supplant the harpsichord as the most popular keyboard instrument at the same time as new instrumental styles were emerging such as the Classical sonata form and accompanied Lied was no mere coincidence. The revolutionary expressive capabilities of the piano were ideally suited to the emotional flexibility of the new genres and helped to shape them.
