For the third set of concerts in their 2020 series the Herschel Trio are joined by the acclaimed soprano Julia Doyle and violinist Huw Daniel in a programme exploring cantatas by the masters of the French baroque cantata - Rameau, Clèrambault and Monteclair – alongside instrumental music by their great contemporary François Couperin.

Julia Doyle (soprano) has performed all over the world and is established as a specialist soprano in baroque repertoire.  She has performed as a soloist with many of the world’s leading ensembles, including the Monteverdi Choir & English Baroque Soloists, Tafelmusik, Collegium Vocale Gent, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Bach Vereniging, Concerto Copenhagen and the Orchestra of the Age of the Enlightenment.  She has a wide and varied discography with these ensembles and others.

“radiant, intelligent and wholly engaging” The Guardian

“… a shining champion of the soprano arias” Gramophone

Huw Daniel (violin) is a member of Dunedin Consort, Irish Baroque Orchestra, the Sixteen, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.  Since 2004 he has been leader of the Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música in Porto, Portugal, and has also been a regular guest leader for the English Concert, the Sixteen, the European Union Baroque Orchestra and Barokkanerne (Oslo).

"… a style that was by turns incisive, richly embellished and highly colourful" Irish Times

"The violinist Huw Daniel led the way, waltzing on the spot so much that his Strictly contract surely awaits" The Times

    The Herschel Trio

The Herschel Trio formed in 2011, its members all having relocated from London to the north of England.  Graham O’Sullivan (flute/recorder) has performed with the country’s leading baroque ensembles, and is a member of the Dunedin Consort.  Susanna Pell (viola da gamba) spent the first 25 years of her career touring the world and making highly acclaimed recordings with Fretwork and The Dufay Collective.  Her eclectic musical output has included appearances on the soundtracks of several films, including Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and on Kate Bush’s 2005 album Aerial.  Mie Hayashi (harpsichord) has performed throughout the world both as a soloist and chamber artist, winning prizes at the 2005 Japan International Early Music Competition and the 2006 Bruges International Early Music Competition.  Her solo recordings include Ascents of the Soul (Omnibus Classics, 2016) and Royer – Pièces de Clavecin (Resonus Classics, 2019).

Since 2017 the trio has promoted its own concert series based in York, inviting colleagues to join them to perform programmes of chamber music spanning 4 centuries.   This year their concert series will include performances in County Durham, Northumberland and Newcastle in addition to the concerts they will be giving in York, and they will be joined by four more outstanding musicians: oboist Molly Marsh, violinist Huw Daniel, soprano Julia Doyle and Charlotte Barbour-Condini (recorder).

In 2017, the trio released their debut disc together ‘A Concert near Darmstadt’ (Omnibus Classics), a recording of music by Telemann.

The Herschel Trio demonstrates an ability to play with superb cohesion as an ensemble, whilst allowing each instrumentalist their own space and colour…” Early Music
