Mischief & Merriment

Lydia Gosnell, Miriam Monaghan, Caoimhe de Paor, Teresa Wrann recorders

Christmas was the highlight of the Tudor calendar: following a strict period of advent fasting, celebrations were stretched into a twelve day indulgence of mischief and merriment. These elaborate celebrations were presided over by the Lord of Misrule, who coordinated the Christmastide entertainments for the court. In this concert, Palisander return to the NCEM to take on the role of Lords of Misrule, presenting festive songs and dances that will keep your toes tapping throughout December!  Traditional renaissance settings of familiar carols will be paired with music to accompany the whopping 20+ course Tudor Christmas dinner; Yuletide courtly dances and playful contemporary takes the Lord of Misrule’s spectacles.

Palisander will showcase their full recorder family, from the 6 inch garklein, to the 6 foot contrabass, and everything in between. Featured composers will include Antony Holborne, John Dowland, Thoinot Arbeau and Michael Praetorius.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the NCEM. We’ve put in place many changes to ensure your safety, wellbeing and enjoyment. In order that you understand these before booking, please click here to read the details.

Please note there is a £1.50 administration fee per transaction
