Mozart and a Miracle
Mozart and a Miracle aims to recreate some of the atmosphere of wonderful 19th-century living room parties, where the intimacy of a chamber music performance was applied to orchestral-scale pieces. Pocket Sinfonia will take audiences on a journey through the dark wintery nights of Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 24 in C minor transcribed and liberally embellished by J. N. Hummel, leading to the Christmas cheer of Mozart’s Sleigh Ride in a new transcription by Pocket Sinfonia and Haydn’s ‘Miracle’ Symphony no. 102 in B flat in another historical transcription, this time created by London-based Muzio Clementi.
We are delighted to welcome this sparkling young ensemble to York for the first time. Using both modern and period instruments, Pocket Sinfonia was formed to recreate the atmosphere of wonderful 19th-century living room parties, where the intimacy of chamber music performance could be applied to orchestral-scale pieces usually heard in a much larger setting. The ensemble is looking forward to bringing this party spirit to York using their own ‘Pocket’ transcriptions as well as historical transcriptions of masterpieces by Mozart and Haydn.
“in terms of sheer energy, the palm must go to Pocket Sinfonia, who managed to make Mozart’s brilliant Haffner Symphony burst with the energy of an orchestra; what’s more, the little pauses from pianist Emil Duncumb infused it with a real chamber-style rhythmic pliability.” The Telegraph
