    A Year In Song

As part of Song Day ('The Year of Song'), Bethany Seymour, Helen Charlston and Gwilym Bowen perform songs by Schumann and Brahms, accompanied by Peter Seymour.

    Robert Schumann    Frauenliebe und Leben
                                 Liederkreis op.39
    Johannes Brahms    Songs

1840 was a momentous year for Robert Schumann. He finally married Clara Wieck, after a lengthy legal battle with her disapproving father, and in this Liederjahr (‘Year of Song’) he composed over 138 songs. In so many of the songs, as well as the whole of Frauenliebe, Robert sees life through Clara’s eyes, commenting and empathising in return from the piano.

Bethany Seymour and Helen Charlston (winner of the 2018 Handel Singing Competition) gave a recital in the 2019 York Early Music Festival and will be soloists in Yorkshire Bach Choir’s performance of Messiah in December along with Gwilym Bowen who is noted for his beautifully expressive performances of 18th -and early 19th- century music.
