    Beethoven An die ferne Geliebte

and songs by Mozart, Zelter, Reichart, Schubert, Hensel, Schumann

The National Centre for Early Music is a perfect setting for song recitals, and particularly those of intimate and expressive German Lieder which were written for, and originally performed in, private houses. Beethoven’s emotional Andie ferne Geliebte (‘To the Distant Beloved’) and the dramatic portrayal of unrequited love in Schubert’s great song cycle Die schöne Müllerin are heard alongside songs by Schumann, Mozart, Zelter, Reichart and Hensel.

As well as James Gilchrist (arguably the greatest interpreter of Die schöne Müllerin) and Mhairi Lawson we also hear two student singers selected from their outstanding recitals at the University. The fortepiano offers an appropriately sensitive accompaniment and surtitle translations will give ready access to the human emotions of the texts.
