For the final set of concerts in their 2020 series the Herschel Trio are delighted to be joined by recorder player Charlotte Barbour-Condini for a programme which includes festive music by baroque masters from across Europe.

Charlotte Barbour-Condini (recorder) came to prominence in 2012 when she became the first recorder player to become a BBC Young Musician concerto finalist.  Following studies at UCL and the Royal Academy of Music, she has since performed with the English Chamber Orchestra and Academy of Ancient Music. She is a founding member of the Parandrus Consort, with whom she won first prize in the ORDA international competition in Amsterdam in 2017. Charlotte’s repertoire spans from the 14th century to contemporary commissions.    As a session musician Charlotte has performed live with The Good, the Bad and the Queen (with Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon, Simon Tong and Tony Allen), on Later with Jools Holland and with Yebba and Mark Ronson on Strictly Come Danciing.

“… her engaging stage persona and extraordinary musical ability shining through … an amazing and talented young woman, and a concert of pure joy” Early Music Review

    The Herschel Trio

The Herschel Trio formed in 2011, its members all having relocated from London to the north of England.  Graham O’Sullivan (flute/recorder) has performed with the country’s leading baroque ensembles, and is a member of the Dunedin Consort.  Susanna Pell (viola da gamba) spent the first 25 years of her career touring the world and making highly acclaimed recordings with Fretwork and The Dufay Collective.  Her eclectic musical output has included appearances on the soundtracks of several films, including Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and on Kate Bush’s 2005 album Aerial.  Mie Hayashi (harpsichord) has performed throughout the world both as a soloist and chamber artist, winning prizes at the 2005 Japan International Early Music Competition and the 2006 Bruges International Early Music Competition.  Her solo recordings include Ascents of the Soul (Omnibus Classics, 2016) and Royer – Pièces de Clavecin (Resonus Classics, 2019).

Since 2017 the trio has promoted its own concert series based in York, inviting colleagues to join them to perform chamber music spanning 4 centuries.  This year their concert series will include performances in County Durham, Northumberland and Newcastle in addition to the concerts they will be giving in York, and they will be joined by four more outstanding musicians: oboist Molly Marsh, violinist Huw Daniel, soprano Julia Doyle and Charlotte Barbour-Condini (recorder).

In 2017, the trio released their debut disc together ‘A Concert near Darmstadt’ (Omnibus Classics), a recording of music by Telemann.

The Herschel Trio demonstrates an ability to play with superb cohesion as an ensemble, whilst allowing each instrumentalist their own space and colour…” Early Music
