The Baroque Italian cantata was intended as refined vocal chamber music for the connoisseur, often being composed for a particular patron, singer, or even for a special occasion. In one respect it was the natural successor to the madrigal, in that its texts frequently focused on pastoral poetic conceits. The lecture will comment on aspects of the poetry and music of some of the 54 cantatas and duets that Handel composed during his extended stay in Italy (1706 – 10), and two much later duets, composed in London in 1741, which have close links with his oratorio, Messiah.
