A Monk’s Life: Music from the Cloisters, 1550-1620

In the years following the Council of Trent (1545-63), Catholic monasteries in Southern Germany sought to exemplify the ideas of the Counter-Reformation through reforming their lifestyle, renewing the monastic liturgy, and introducing elaborate music. Works by famous composers such as Lassus played a key role, but many monks also expressed their new-found religious confidence through masses and motets. This programme explores their creativity by tracing the life of a monk from acceptance into the cloister through to assuming the role of abbot and finally entering the heavenly kingdom.
