In September 1737, Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), the most celebrated German composer of his day, left Hamburg for a long-delayed journey to Paris, where he had been invited by several of France’s most celebrated musicians including the flautist Michel Blavet, the violinist Jean-Pierre Guignon and the gambist Jean-Baptiste Forqueray.

This programme celebrates that visit and the music Telemann wrote in preparation for the visit, the celebrated set of Paris Quartets, works which rank among the masterpieces of 18th century chamber music.  The programme also includes works by those musicians for whom Telemann composed the quartets.

    The programme is as follows:

Telemann -  Paris Quartet no.1 in G major
Blavet - Flute sonata in b minor
Rameau - Premier Concert from Pièces de clavecin en concerts
Guignon - Violin Sonata in D major
    Forqueray - Jupiter
Telemann - Paris Quartet no.12 in e minor
